Stop Comparing Yourself To Others On Social Media

Stop Comparing Yourself To Others On Social Media

I have been sucked into the downward spiral of playing the comparison game more times than I would like to admit. When having a platform that is driven via social media it is my job to not only stay in the know but strive to be one step ahead. I spend countless hours scrolling through Instagram, researching other bloggers, reading comments, etc. and to be completely honest – it can become a dark hole. I've sat in front of my computer wondering why I’m not "good" enough to secure this partnership or that collaboration, why my business hasn’t yet landed me a lavish trip to Paris or even worse has had me question if I will ever reach my finish line.

No matter how tough of a player you are, constantly comparing yourself to others is a battle that you will never win. I wanted to pass along some tips that have helped me tackle comparison in hopes that they will do the same for you.

7 Ways To Give Comparison The Middle Finger:

1.    Don’t Let Comparison Paralyze You
When scrolling through a feed full of accomplishment after accomplishment you have the power to decide if you want to feel instantly defeated or if you want to let those images fuel your determination. The moment you let your thoughts paralyze you is the moment you silence your hopes and dreams. Instead of letting the comparison game cripple you turn those negative thoughts into a fire ball of motivation.

2.  Smother The Negative Self-Talk
In an effort to kick that negative talk to the curb you should simply become aware of your actions. Take mental notes of how often you compare yourself to others so you realize when you need to slam on the breaks. Award yourself the time to recognize when negative thoughts are brewing so you can insert a mindset that confidently screams, “I AM GOOD ENOUGH.”

3.  You Should Go And Love Yourself
People often resort to the comparing game when losing sight of their own path. To deflect negative thoughts it’s crucial to have a loving and healthy relationship with yourself. Once you are able to look in the mirror and feel nothing but love, self-worth will surely follow.

4.  The Process
If you remember anything from this post remember this: people, typically, only share the beautiful end result and keep their blood, sweat, tears and #unfiltered moments in a separate photo album. When you come upon a post full of triumph and sweet victory remind yourself that every one of us has our own process and they too were once in your shoes.

5.  Celebrate You
One of the coolest things about life is that we all have the ability to share our unique gifts and talents with others. With that comes a sense of uniqueness that should be celebrated no matter the amount of missteps.  One of my favorite sayings is, “Fall 7 times stand up 8.” Embracing our own failures and believing in the process will allow us to grow and trust in our own journey.

6.  Celebrate Others
Happiness is not a limited resource. It is our responsibility to build each other up and celebrate success even when it’s not our own. Mark my words that you will feel better about your own life when you embrace celebrating the accomplishments of those around you.

7.   Buh-bye
Out of sight, out of mind. If all else fails, you have to pull the trigger and hit the “unfollow” button. Limiting the amount of screen time you have with certain people can be an overall mental game changer.

What are some ways you stop yourself from playing the comparison game?

Celebrating you,
Chels
