3 Healthy Holiday Tips

3 Healthy Holiday Tips

Ah the holidays:

an endless supply of desserts
passed hors d’oeuvres
flowing drinks
late nights
. . . sounds about right? Thought so.

Here’s the deal, I won’t sit here and tell you to not enjoy yourself during the jolliest time of the year but I will tell you that I don’t believe the holiday season is a reason to not fit into your jeans come January 1st. To some, this may be a shocking statement but it is possible to have fun without completely sacrificing your health.

3 healthy holiday tips that will help you keep it right and tight:

PRE GAME

Sorry honey, put down the shot glass – this is a different type of pregame. My #1 tip for not overindulging at holiday parties is to fuel your body with proper nutrients beforehand. We all know what happens when we get wrapped up in our busy schedule and forget to eat. We walk into the party and B line it for the tray of finger foods since we are so completely famished and before we can even take a breather, we’ve inhaled enough food for three people. Not only is that not a cute look but now your stomach wants to explode and all you can think about is curling up on the couch instead of enjoying the party. So, how do we avoid this? I’m glad you asked. Before you head out the door to jingle all the way, make sure you eat a meal that is packed with fiber and protein. Almond butter with an apple, avocado with eggs, a high protein smoothie or whole grain bread topped with eggs are a few examples of healthy snacking.

EAT, DRINK AND BE MERRY

We’ve already checked eating off the list so let’s move on to drinking.

So, you’re a wine / champagne drinker? Cheers to you. If that’s your go to, do yourself a favor and add a few ice cubes to your glass. I know, I know, the horror but . . . just do it  - ok? It will add a hint of water aka hydration to your glass of jingle juice and in case no one told you lately, water is your best friend.

Speaking of hydration, having a full glass of water in between each alcoholic beverage will not only keep you from acting a fool at your Christmas office party but will also help keep things on the healthier side. You’ve heard it about a 100 times but a reminder never hurt - stay away from sugary drinks. STAY AWAY! In my humble opinion, the hidden calories and headache to come are not worth it but you do you. Vodka and soda water with a lemon or lime is the perfect simple concoction to boost you to being the social butterfly that you are.

 KEEP IT TIGHT

Want to know who loves a color coded agenda more than me? No one. The answer is no one.

The holiday season hands you every excuse to quickly veer off your wellness track but making excuses is for losers and you my friend are not a loser. So, you’re busy and overwhelmed? Join the club. I know there are a lot of presents to wrap and deadlines to hit before the clock strikes 2020 but that is no valid reason to give up on yourself.

My bullet proof tip in keeping a fitness routine on track, especially during the holidays, is to schedule your workouts. Quite literally schedule them before hand and color code them into your calendar as if they were a very important meeting that you cannot cancel. Not only will your body reap the benefits of sweating but more importantly, so will your mind. Grant yourself the gift of taking care of the one body you have been given.
