Feature: Boss Babe Allison Norton
I'm so exited to introduce this months boss babe, Allison Norton, who is a ray of sunshine that exudes hustle and heart. Allison is giving us insight into running her own business, chatting fashion trends and sharing social media tips.
1. Introduce yourself! What are the 3 things we should know about you?
Hello! I was born and raised in Phoenix Arizona, am a proud USC Trojan, and my newest favorite place in the world is Nantucket (thanks to my recent trip there this summer!).
2. Walk us through the steps of how Polka Dot Media became a reality
I’m one third owner and co-founder of Polka Dot Media, which is a boutique digital media firm. We partner with brands and influencers (one of our primary clients is Lauren Conrad) to create social media and editorial content. We all met at our previous company about five years ago, and when we saw that the company was moving in a different direction, we decided to create PDM. It’s so amazing to work with women I respect and who challenge me daily. I wake up feeling grateful every day!
3. As a young woman running her own business, what unique challenges/fears have you faced and how have you conquered them?
Managing a constantly full schedule—between industry events, client meetings, day-to-day-work tasks, managing employees, and personal time—is a major balancing act. When you run your own business and are your own boss, it’s important to “schedule” personal time. For me, that’s time with my family, time with my boyfriend and friends, and time to travel, which I believe is the best way to stay refreshed and inspired. This year, one of my New Year’s Resolutions was to be more selective with what I add to my schedule and to not be afraid of RSVPing “no.” It has helped me balance my time so much.
4. What work opportunity has given you a “pinch me” moment?
Attending Lauren’s runway show in New York City in 2015. This moment right here was pretty special!
5. Ok, I have to fan girl for a second. Tell us what it’s like working with Lauren Conrad!
She’s a wonderful person and so accomplished. She has worked so hard for every ounce of success she’s received. I feel lucky to call her both a client and a friend.
6. Let’s talk fashion, what trend are you currently crushing on?
Currently: A pair of high-waisted Levi’s that fit perfectly in all the right places (these are my favorites), a woven tote that can instantly elevate any airport outfit (I just ordered this one) and delicate, layered gold necklaces (I have this one on constant rotation lately).
7. You and your roommate, Jillian, live in a California dream apartment. What is your favorite room and why?
Jillian and I grew up together and have known each other since kindergarten, so it has been a dream come true living together! Not all best friends can live as harmoniously together as we do, so we feel lucky to have had such a fun chapter. I love our open living / dining room. The two rooms flow into each other, and it’s where we spend most of our time. We can often be found hosting impromptu dinner parties with friends on our big dining room table, and watching movies together with my boyfriend and Jillian’s fiancé in the living room on any given weeknight. Bonus: We happen to be dating boys who are best friends, which is such a rare situation and so much fun!
8. With a jam-packed work schedule, what is your trick for finding balance and being present in your personal life?
I used to work on weekends a lot when we first started our company, but I’ve learned that doing that only leaves me feeling burnt out, scattered and unfocused when the actual weekdays roll around. Now, I try to stay off my computer on the weekends, and I also make sure I put my phone away when I’m sharing a meal with someone. Limiting screen time has helped me create that sense of balance in a day and age when we’re always available and always “plugged in.”
10. Knowing what you know now, what would you tell your younger self?
Communication is key, don’t sweat the small stuff, and think before speaking (or emailing!).
11. Your Instagram page is a work of art!! Share with us some of your social media tips.
Thank you so much! I always take photos that are lit with bright, natural lighting, which makes editing them and filtering them that much easier. I think having a consistent theme and voice helps followers to get to know you when they’re looking at your posts. I also swear by using Planoly, not only for my own account but for all our clients as well. It helps keep things organized and lets you create a grid and schedule out posts. I’m also a huge fan of insta stories these days!
